Remote app for Apple TV

I'm curious if anyone has had luck with the iPhone / iPad app for controlling the Apple TV.
I can use it except the gesture area. It seems if you try and do the pass through and then slide it doesn't work. If I turn off OiceOver it does but still. Would love to be able to use this. I'm pretty certain the keyboard will work but it's this gesture area, as the VoiceOver calls it, which seems not to work.
At least not with iOS 7.1.

Thoughts? Or ways to make it work?
